German Firm to Quit Niger Delta Too
14 Aug 2006

Lagos

Shortly after a US oil and gas service engineering company said it would close operations in the Niger Delta, a German construction giant has said the same.

Julius Berger has begun moving workers and equipment out of the delta because of incessant cases of kidnapping by militants in the region, said Bayelsa state's governor.

Goodluck Jonathan said: "Julius Berger is packing, they all want to leave. All the workers are resigning because, in Bayelsa state, they have kidnapped one of them."

The governor added that a road between Port Harcourt and Kaiama that was meant to be completed next year would "remain a dream".

Jonathan said that communities should stop encouraging kidnapping and that troops would need to be sent in if the area became ungovernable.

Many firms working in the area were said to be reviewing their operations. Last week Willbros said it would disinvest in the region.
